Each winter, the ski resort of Courchevel seeks to provide a variety of authentic events and unexpected activities to make an impression on its guests. One of them, the “Art au Sommet” exhibition, is a contemporary art event through which artists transform Courchevel into a true open-air museum. This bold challenge began ten years ago through a partnership between Courchevel and the Galeries Bartoux to bring art and culture into the French Alps.
At the origin of this great open-air exhibition is Salvador Dali, a 20th-century Surrealism master who, 20 years after his death, was honoured at the ski resort of Courchevel with a high-altitude tribute in his name. By exhibiting his most beautiful works on mountain peaks, the ski resort of Courchevel and Les Galeries Bartoux made “Art au Sommet” an artistic gathering with surrealist creativity.
At the peak of the mountains, skiers and passers-by get the privilege of enjoying beautiful works of contemporary art on a mountain slope, from the ski lifts on the way up, or in the streets of Courchevel. These unique, original works amuse and fascinate the skiers as they enjoy their runs. If you’ll be skiing or just passing through, bring your camera so you’re sure to get a souvenir of the sight. Each year, Courchevel welcomes a number of works by different artists, including Richard Orlinski, Salvador Dali, Julien Marinetti, David Cintract and many others.
With a variety of art events, Courchevel proposes skiers and art lovers a modern ski resort with a modern penchant. Each event is an exceptional opportunity for the visitors of Courchevel to develop a critical eye for art and admire great works while they ski.
